Big Data Analytics: Let’s Get It Started!

Frank Coleman By Frank Coleman Senior Director, DELL EMC Services June 7, 2013

EMC’s VP and Global Marketing CTO Chuck Hollis recently blogged about the work teams at EMC are doing around Data Analytics. He specifically highlighted slides from Malte Bernholz, VP of Corporate Consulting at EMC, describing his work looking at internal Big Data Analytics projects. The takeaways and examples outline a great foundation for anyone starting out in this area (and you should be!)

Here are a few keys to success that I want to reiterate based on my own experience:

  • Executive Sponsorship – If your executives want it, it will get done!
  • IT Enablement – Access to the data, in an easily consumable manner
  • Strong Team – All members need to work together (see roles below)
  • Continuous Improvement Process – Data analytics is an iterative process. Do it and improve it, then improve it again, and again and again…

Follow these steps and I Gotta Feeling you’ll like the results.

I’ve said before that Data Science is a team sport. Identifying the “right” team is  most essential to your success. Chuck said it best: “Fail to get the team right, and the best process/platform won’t help.”

So what are the key roles for this team?

  • Business Sponsor – Executive sponsorship is a must
  • Project Lead – Strong results-orientated leader who keeps the team focused
  • Business Analyst/ Project Manager – Analytical thinker who can also keep project on plan
  • Data Engineer – A MUST have. This is the data subject matter expert (SME)
  • Data Scientist – We all know and love this role: Expert in all things analytics, coding, mathematics
  • IT Rep – Data enabler who ensures we have the data – saving the team from chasing it or duplicating other teams’ work

Are you starting out or do you have an established Data Analytics team? I would love to hear if you also have these key players on your team, or if you have other roles we may not have considered yet.
